StrengthBuilding Partners Mentoring Programs

Our newest Mentoring Program!

StrengthBuilding Partners (SBP), working in partnership with Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) and staff of Hohokam Middle School, proposed to develop a mentoring program designed exclusively for the middle school aged child. The overall mission of the SBP Mentoring Program is to provide an innovative, school-based mentoring program through a unique collaboration between a school and a community based non–profit organization for 6th, 7th and 8th grade children with the greatest need and to evaluate its effectiveness through a rigorous evaluation process. The goals of this project include the following: (1) provide general guidance; (2) increase participation in, and enhance the ability to benefit from, elementary and secondary education; and (3) encourage the setting of goals and planning for the future, including encouragement of graduation from secondary school and planning for postsecondary education or training. The objectives of each of these goals are based upon the current research documenting the characteristics of a high-quality, effective mentoring program. The outcome will be an increased number of youth graduating from high school and, moving on to college or other types of training that will prepare them to be productive and successful citizens.

The program began October 1, 2007 and is funded for three years. After interviewing many qualified applicants, Lisa Cordova was hired as the program Liaison. Lisa began working on January 7, 2008. Lisa and Marie Stickford, the Mentoring Coordinator, are busy recruiting mentors from the community. More caring adults are being sought for the program. The primary requirement is a desire to help a student grow in his or her self-esteem, confidence and feeling of self-worth.
